Research in Orthopaedics: at the Rizzoli the Director of the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs. And the debate on the prospects of an aging Europe

The three-day EORS, the European Orthopedic Research Society, inaugurated its meeting on Wednesday, September 14th at the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute (Research Center, Via di Barbiano 1/10, at 6 pm) with a lecture held by the astrophysicist Simonetta Di Pippo, UNOOSA Director, the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs.

Immagine locandina EORS 2016 Bologna"It's an opportunity for confrontation with an Italian scientist who has achieved extraordinary results - says Professor Nicola Baldini, head of the Rizzoli Laboratory of Orthopaedic Pathophysiology and Regenerative Medicine and chairman of the EORS 2016 meeting. "Simonetta Di Pippo will talk about space and global health, with reference to the UN goal of increasing the use of technologies transferring the information acquired through space missions to research in the biomedical and public health field."

Among the topics presented by over two hundred international speakers: 3D printing in orthopedics, stem cell therapy and the results of the most recent studies on musculoskeletal diseases. During EORS the European Societies of Biomechanics and Biomaterials will also hold their symposia.

The future of research and the health scene for the coming decades in a Europe where population is aging will be the theme of the meeting open to public that EORS will hold on Saturday, September 17th at the Stabat Mater Hall (Archiginnasio Library, 9 am), with the patronage of the University of Bologna, the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute, the City of Bologna, Unindustria and the Chamber of Commerce.

"The goal - says Professor Baldini, organizer of the meeting - is to debate with the scientific community and health professionals, jointly to the institutions and the productive world, choices imposed by the evolution of the European society and the need for sustainable health services in the field of musculoskeletal diseases, which are well known to have a very high impact in terms of incidence of direct and indirect costs. Looking ahead, one must address the training of future generations of doctors and researchers, who will need to acquire the new necessary skills to interact in an well integrated manner with the production sector."
