Personal information - Education and work experience


Director of the Complex Structure: Shoulder and elbow Surgery

1978: Degree in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Bologna.

Specialization in Orthopedics and Traumatology at the University of Bologna, and in Physiotherapy at the University of Parma.

  • May 1980 – June 1989: Assistant and Medical Assistant at the Orthopedics and Traumatology ward of the Hospital S.Maria Nuova in Reggio Emilia, Italy.
  • July 1989 – June 2000: MD at the Rizzoli Orthopedics Institute in Bologna, 1st division ward.
  • From June 2000 he is in charge of an autonomous unit of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, which he directs from 2012.
  • 2013-2014: Deputy Director of the Special Orthopedic-Trauma Pathology Department of the IOR.

Fluent French, basic English.

Basic knowledge and use of the Office package and the Internet.

  • 1980-2000: teacher for the Professional Nursing School in Reggio Emilia and Bologna.
  • From 2002 to 2012: contract professor at the Orthopedics and Traumatology Specialization School of the University of Bologna, for the course in Shoulder and Elbow Pathology.
  • He teaches at the University Master "Biomechanics, pathology and therapeutic treatment of the upper limb" at the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute.
  • Speaker or moderator at over 450 national and international conventions;
  • editor of the book "The Elbow "(Springer 2018) and of the atlas of surgical anatomy “"Vie di accesso in Traumatologia" (“Access paths in traumatology”, Timeo 2018);
  • author of 10 book chapters in the field of orthopedics, and of 170 scientific works in the field of orthopedics and traumatology, 95 of which are indexed on Pubmed;
  • he was in charge of 16 current research projects at the IOR, and has collaborated to other 64 projects;
  • he realized 5 patents regarding shoulder and elbow pathologies;
  • he organized several courses/conventions on shoulder and elbow pathology; from 2007, he has organized the biannual Rizzoli International Advanced Elbow Course;
  • he is ordinary member of the SECEC (Societé Europenne de la Chirurgie de l’Epaule e du Coude);
  • editorial board for the orthopedic review “Musculoskeletal Surgery - Chirurgia degli Organi di Movimento (surgery of the movement organs);
  • from 2015 to 2016 he was part of the Direction Board of the Italian Society for Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (SICSeG), of which he was President in the two-year period 2013-2014;
  • from 2015 to 2017 he was in charge of the research line “Medical Orthopedic Pathology” at the IOR;
  • member of AO Trauma Europe;
  • he obtained the grade 2 national scientific qualification.

Traumatic and degenerative shoulder and elbow pathology (regenerative medicine for rotator cuffs and shoulder and elbow prostheses).
