Research

The Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute is a hospital and research structure highly specialized in the field of orthopedy and of the diseases of the musculoskeletal system. In 1981 the Italian Ministry of Health gave the "Rizzoli" the status of a Scientific Research and Cure Institute (Istituto di Ricovero e Cura a Carattere Scientifico - IRCCS), acknowledging the high level of healthcare assistance and healthcare reached by the Institute.

In fact, the institute's strength lies in the close integration between the healthcare assistance and the scientific research activities. Furthermore, the institute is site of university teaching, due to its collaboration with the University of Bologna.

In addition to basic orthopaedic-traumatology surgery, the Institute performs extremely highly specialized interventions in the treatment of tumors of the musculoskeletal system, pediatric pathology, spine, upper and lower limbs pathology, sports pathology, articular degenerative pathology, metabolic and rheumatologic pathology, in the diagnosis and treatment of skeletal genetic diseases. 

The main research topics of the focused ultrasounds therapy are:

  • treatment of primary and secondary tumoral musculoskeletal lesions;
  • focal lesions from degenerative pathologies.
