A (Prot. n. 17081 of May 15th, 2012). With the nursing support of the Intensive Care Unit, the outpatient clinic represents an enormous progress in the treatment of osteo-articular and spinal pain in its entirety. The extremely useful integration of the ultrasound guide to the infiltration-suction maneuvers allows to avoid contact and damage to the nerve and the vascular structures (often intimately associated with the treated structures), increasing the accuracy and effectiveness of intra-peri-articular, peritendinous and perineural techniques. To date, more than 1.000 patients have been followed for the treatment of orthopedic pain related to degenerative complications with onset of discopathies, joint instability, arthrosis, spinal canal stenosis and subsequent pain, neurological disorders and functional limitations
  • Since 2007: Medical Director with permanent assignment in the Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Unit (Director Dr. Stefano Bonarelli), IOR
  • 2006-07: service at the Local Health Authority of Rimini (Director Dr. Mauro Nastasi) with permanent assignment, deepening the knowledge of local-regional, central and peripheral techniques in the thoracic and orthopaedic patient (with particular interest in the upper limb, in the Center of Excellence "Shoulder-Elbow", directed by Prof. G. Porcellini), combined with the TIVA/TCI (total intravenous anaesthesia/target-controlled infusion)
  • 2005-06: Anesthesiologist and resuscitator at the Scientific Research Hospital San Raffaele in Milan (Director Prof. G. Torri) with a temporary assignment, acquiring particular experience in the techniques of continuous loco-regional central and peripheral anesthesia, applied to orthopedic, general, obstetrician-gynecological-pediatric and thoraco-vascular surgery, in combination with TIVA/TCI
  • 2004-05: service at the Emergencies Sector of "Bologna Soccorso" (Dir. O.U. Dr. G. Gordini) as agreed with the School of Specialization in Anaesthesia and Resuscitation of the University of Bologna: 160 hours of activity alongside tutors on ambulances and helicopter rescue; 400 hours of autonomous medical guard at the Emergencies Sector of Bologna Soccorso.

Teaching activities
  • He participated as a lecturer to theoretical-practical courses of regional anesthesia and analgesia (ENS-US) organized at the Rizzoli Institute and in external hospitals. In particular, since 2010 he has organized and directed 60 editions of the Theoretical-Practical Intensive Course in Locoregional Anesthesia and Echo-guided Vascular Access at the Rizzoli Institute, which was attended by over 800 anaesthetists from hospital-university companies on the national territory. In 2016, the course evolved into the Triathlon-Advanced course in Locoregional Anesthesia and Echoguided Vascular Access, thanks to the collaboration with the Institute of Human Anatomy of the University of Bologna, and of a Cadaver-Workshop aimed at a better understanding of the anatomo-functional ergonomics that is achieved when using peripheral anesthesiological techniques
  • Since January 2009 he is tutor at the School of Specialization in Anesthesia and Resuscitation of the University of Bologna. Since April 2016 he has been appointed Sector Tutor for doctors in specialist training at the Unit of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care of the IOR
  • In the aa.yy. 2015-16-17-18 he teached Local-Regional Anaesthesia (Prof. F. Fattorini) at the School of Specialization in Anaesthesia, Resuscitation and Intensive Care of the University of Rome "La Sapienza" (Director: Prof. M. V. Ranieri)
  • He teaches at the National School of Ultrasonography in Antalgic Musculoskeletal Therapy IOR-SIUMB (Italian Society of Ultrasonography in Medicine and Biology).
Scientific activities

Between 2007 and 2020 he participated as a speaker to over 300 national and international congresses, including the "Nysora World Anesthesia Congress" (Dubai, March 7th-12th, 2010), the "12th Nysora Annual Symposium on Regional Anesthesia & Acute Pain Management" (New York, September 21st-22nd, 2013). He was invited as Instructor from the first to fifth editions of the "NYSORA Middle-East International Symposium" (2014-2019).
He has held over 120 workshops and cadaver workshops on anaesthesia and regional ens-echo-guided analgesia techniques.
He is author/coauthor of 20 publications and first author of the book "Tecniche di anestesia locoregionale ecoguidate" ("Echo-guided Locoregional Anesthesia Techniques") with the publisher Elsevier-Masson (copyright 2010) and the book  "Tecniche ecoguidate in anestesia e terapia del dolore" ("Echo-guided Anesthesia and Pain Therapy Techniques") with the same publisher (copyright 2013). • President ESRA (European Society of Regional Anesthesia), Italian Section, for the three-year period 2021-24.

He participates in phase II and phase III research projects involving the Rizzoli Institute.

Clinical and/or Scientific interests

He is interested in the techniques of central and peripheral regional anesthesia and analgesia in the thoracic and orthopaedic patient (adult and pediatric). He studies techniques of controlled hypotension (through the combination of central/peripheral nerve blocks and TIVA) aimed at reducing intraoperative blood loss. Use of supraglottic devices in major surgery and bronchial blockers in thoracic surgery. Support of ultrasound guidance to the development of single and continuous central and peripheral nerve blocks, to central and peripheral venous cannulation and to the therapy of acute and chronic pain.

Together with that of surgery - increasingly minimally invasive, thanks to the use of arthroscopic, laparoscopic or robotic techniques - it becomes essential to reduce the anesthesiological impact, in order to maintain the patient's homeostasis. To this end, central and peripheral loco-regional anesthesia plays a pivotal role (abolishing the nociceptive stimulus and vegetative reflexes related to it) in the multi-specialist approach that allows to improve the postoperative course, with a faster and more beneficial recovery and a significant reduction in the duration of the hospitalization.

The integration between the different professionals implements a cultural change, compared to consolidated techniques and unchanged habits, which allows, depending on the type of surgery to which they apply and to the hospital structure, to consolidate new protocols of Fast Track Surgery or ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) even more necessary in the fragile, pediatric and geriatric patient.
