Orthopaedic Medical Pathology

Introduction

Projects inside the Medical Orthopaedic Pathology line research:

Studies about the influence of ageing, therapies and lifestyle on tissues of the musculoskeletal system. Patient-related prognostic factors are important for the success of reconstruction/regeneration techniques and could also lead to the failure of the best treatment available. For example, some factors, such as osteoporosis (from ageing or estrogenic deficiency), diseases such as diabetes, malabsorptions, some therapies (glucocorticoids) and harmful lifestyles (i.e. smoking and alcoholism) represent negative prognostic elements for the success of prosthetic implants and interventions of osteosynthesis while being themselves cause of traumatic and degenerative lesions . Microarchitectural tissue changing, cellular alterations, poor vascularisation and a catabolic microenvironment seem to be the principle causes which affect the results of reconstructive techniques. Studies are in progress in order to evaluate the effects of ageing, systemic therapies, harmful lifestyle on mesenchymal stem cells, differentiated cells, tissues and physiopathological mechanism of tissue repair and remodelling.
