Osteoporosis: biomedical research perspectives

October 20th, World Osteoporosis Day. Researchers outside laboratories to meet citizens

October 13th, 2023

As part of the World Osteoporosis Day, Friday, October 20th at 4 p.m. at “Sala Degli Anziani” of Palazzo D'Accursio, researchers from the IRCCS Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute and the University of Bologna will meet the citizens to talk about osteoporosis.

Rizzoli, in fact, is one of the most active centers in the field of biomedical research on osteoporosis and playing a central role both: assistance and laboratory. The Rizzoli works on several fronts: preventing bone fragility, identifying cutting-edge medical therapies, understanding the relationship between the development of the disease and external agents, providing as many tools as possible to patients to manage this pathology together with them. Osteoporosis is a systemic pathology of the skeleton that manifests itself in a progressive reduction of bone tissue mass, making it fragile and with greater risk of fracture. In Italy there are over 5 million people affected by this condition.

The meeting is open to anyone interested to delve deeper into the topic  and is sponsored by the City of Bologna. The main topics presented by the researchers: the relationship between pollution and bone health, the role of nutrition and nutraceutical in the prevention of bone fragility, the study of bone tissue for the detection of new therapies, the measures and practices to prevent falls and fractures.

The organizer of the event, Prof. Nicola Baldini, Director of Biomedical Science and Technologies and Nanobiotechnology Lab of Rizzoli and Professor of the Department of Biomedical and Neuromotor Sciences of the University of Bologna, will open the meeting. During the event there will be times for questions from the audience. The event will be attended by FEDIOS, Italian Federation of Osteoporosis and Skeleton Diseases.
