The Rizzoli Institute as orthopedic hub center of the Regional Health Service

The Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute has strengthened over time, (starting from the Regional Committee resolution May 4th 2009, n. 608) its role as a leading structure in the implementation of hub and network spoke network within the regional health service. 

The service lines regarding hub functions of the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute (according to the Regional Committee resolution December 27th 2022, n. 2315) are:

1.    Orthopaedic oncology;
2.    Spine surgery;  
3.    Pediatric orthopaedics; 
4.    Prosthesis revision and substitution; 
5.    Surgery for severe infectious bone diseases; 
6.    Foot surgery;
7.    Upper limb surgery.

The Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute play the role of hub also through the “mobility of his professional” in different spoke center, thanks to agreements with:

•    the Local Health Authority of Bologna for orthopaedic pediatry, oncological and degenerative orthopaedic, rachis deformity surgery;
•    Hospital-University of Bologna for orthopaedic pediatry, orthopaedic oncology and immunohistochemical molecular investigations;
•    the Local Health Authority of Piacenza for orthopaedic oncology and pediatric orthopaedics;
•    the Local Health Authority of Reggio Emilia (Guastalla Hospital) for pediatric orthopedics;
•    the Local Health Authority of Imola (Imola Hospital) for pediatric orthopedics and elbow surgery.

Since 202, in agreement with the Local Health Authority of Ferrara, The Rizzoli Orthopedic Rehabilitation Centre has been established at the Argenta Hospital, where professionals from Rizzoli (orthopaedic doctors, anesthetists, physiatrists) operates together with the professionals of the Local Health Authority of Ferrara.

The clinical activity services began in November 2021, while the surgery and hospitalization activities began in February 2021. Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute is a strategic center in the Bologna metropolitan area, it is recognized as Coordinator of Traumatological Metropolitan Network. 

A strategic role is confirmed also by the renewed collaboration with Local Health Authority of Bologna for the management of the Bentivoglio Orthopaedic Hospital ward.

In addition, Rizzoli hosts several significant activities that contributes to the network of regional services. 

These assets are:    
•    Musculoskeletal Tissue Bank
•    Regenerative Medicine
•    Register of the Orthopaedic Prosthetic Implants (RIPO).
